Cadillac’s Escalade is big and brash and that’s exactly what its customers are demanding. Those customers are also happy that the vehicle features body-on-frame construction, as opposed to car-like unibody construction many rival full-size luxury SUVs rely on.
These attributes won’t be changing when the Escalade is redesigned, according to Cadillac boss Johan de Nysschen. What will be changing, though, is the level of sophistication and technology.
“The Escalade must become more sophisticated and technically advanced, more detail oriented” de Nysschen told Detroit Free Press. “We can do all that with a body-on-frame architecture.”
Until recently, there were few competitors to the Escalade. However, most luxury brands are developing full-size SUVs of their own. Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz all offer models that rival the Escalade and soon we’ll be able to add Audi, Bentley, BMW, Jeep and even Rolls-Royce to that list.
Competition is certainly heating up, so Cadillac will have to continue improving the Escalade without diminishing what appeals to the vehicle’s existing fans. The Escalade was last redesigned for the 2015 model year so we’re still years away from an all-new model. This gives de Nysschen and his team plenty of time to come up with the ideal mix. And don’t be surprised if an ultra-luxurious version priced well above $100k eventuates.
